An American Dream in Conversation

In the 20th Century, The American Dream was one of material prosperity, hoped for and possibly achieved by some portion of Americans. Today, this dream seems less accessible than ever to an increasing majority of people in America.

To me the question isn’t how do we achieve the American Dream, but rather was it ever truly fulfilling?

My experience is that a more fulfilling dream exists and can be worked towards through cultivating a harmonious relationship with our surroundings. I have found that a vibrant relationship with the natural and social world is key to creating connection and meaning in life, and my work with constructing living spaces has been focused on supporting this relationship.

In this light, the new American Dream I’m exploring is one focused on relationship rather than personal satisfaction—a goal of being in conversation with the natural world, rather than achieving power over it.

What is beauty’s role in life?

Can living in a harmonious space change our relationship to material possessions and our desire for comfort?

What do beauty and harmony mean to you in a living space?
